We may not be drawn to words such as unreliable, unwelcomed, or unsuccessful. But what about the word unfailing? Unfailing love is constant, completely dependable, and inexhaustible.
Human love is important and good, but God’s unfailing love delivers what human love cannot. Author Max Lucado says, “Others have promised and failed. But God has promised and succeeded.” He goes on to explain. “God doesn’t love us less if we fail or more if we succeed.” God never stops loving you—no matter what.
God’s love is everlasting and doesn’t fall short of expectation. It goes far beyond our expectations. His love is tested, demonstrated, and proved. And we can experience it!
You want to know what convinced me that God shows me unfailing love?
- After I committed sin after sin, some egregious, He still forgave me, still welcomed me back into his embrace.
- His only Son, Jesus, suffered and died for me on the cross.
- I read about God’s chosen people, the Israelites, in the Old Testament—a rebellious, stiff-necked people. Time after time, they failed God. Yet, He never gave up on them. He kept on loving them. Even though they turned to other gods (worthless idols) and forgot God, He didn’t give up on them. If He didn’t quit on the Israelites, He won’t quit on me.
- As I look back on my life, I see the many ways God cared for me. I can look at today and see evidence of His love and care.
Hopefully, someone has told you how much God loves you. Even better, open your Bible and read God’s love letters for yourself. Refer to them anytime you need reassurance. For starters, meditate on these Scriptures.
“See what great love the father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God!” (1 John 3:1). Children of God are those who come to Him through belief in Jesus.
I want to be loved like that. I am loved like that! A person lives differently when overwhelmed by the powerful love of God. David says, “For the king trusts in the Lord; through the unfailing love of the Most High he will not be shaken” (Psalm 21:7). We can feel secure in His love and reach out to others. We have a safety net enabling us to take steps of faith—large or small.
“He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to the heart” (Isaiah 40:11).
Often, we hear the phrase “falling out of love.” God does not fall out of love with us.
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” (Isaiah 49:15).
The Apostle Paul said that nothing can separate us from the love of God. “For I am convinced that neither life nor death, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
The prophet Hosea lived out a picture of God’s love, His tenderness and longsuffering. God told him to marry a prostitute, representing the spiritually unfaithful people of Israel. Hosea’s wife cheated on him with other men. She disappointed him, humiliated him, and broke his heart. God instructed Hosea to find his wife, pay off her debts, bring her back home and continue loving her. God wanted his people to repent—to turn away from their sins, stop worshiping other gods, and return to Him with devoted hearts. “All my compassion is aroused” (Hosea 11:8). “I will heal their waywardness and love them freely” (Hosea 14:4). For a more current telling of this love story, I recommend reading Francine River’s novel Redeeming Love.
“Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life” (Ps 23: 6 MSG). How wonderful to be pursued! God’s divine love is transformational and sustaining. “How priceless is your unfailing love!” (Psalm 36:7).
Perhaps love songs express it best. Listen and see if these speak to your heart.
